Search engines give a hand to Japan

As every body knows, Japan endured a lot lately. Not only the earthquakes were devastating, but the tsunami hit was merciless and the second explosion to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant was registered a few moments ago. Witnessing such disasters, one can only wonder what could go worse? I believe I make no mistake when I think people there are really experiencing Armageddon. Since a while, Google started a project called Crisis response. One can find here fresh news, accurate maps and great tools like Person Finder. Find here lots of information, from emergency phone numbers to schedule of planned blackouts. And if you have some spare money, you can donate them to the Red Cross Society very easily, directly from this place. Yahoo is also hosting donation links. Only on Yahoo, at this moment, 19,154 people donated $972,021. Bing has an initiative similar with Google’s, called Microsoft Corporate Citizenship. I would like to use this opportunity to salute the involvement of these companies, which IS making a difference. I believe a lot of people are behind these humanitarian projects; I would like to thank them for the great job they are doing. My thoughts go out to all those who have been affected by this calamity and to their families.

Google vs. Bing scandal

It has been some time now since I first noticed a connection between Google’s and Bing’s results. I own a little niche site which I was updating regularly around one year ago, and was doing pretty good in search results, in both G and B. Unfortunately, due, lack of time (+ a little bit of laziness :D), I lost interest in keeping the site with fresh quality content. In other words, I just left it be. The interesting part is that as soon as my site started to fall in G’s search queries, it also went down on B’s. I found it curious, and then just moved at my business. But now, I have found that this link, this connection between G and B, is not just random. As reported by some other blogs [1][2][3], Google is providing Bing with search results! Btw, Bing released a nice statement, check it out. I really like the word “thoughts” here, in fact, I think it’s wonderfully used in this case.

Well, I’m not going to jump in the details of how G managed to reveal B’s theft (though from what I see , words like ‘hiybbprqag’ are becoming pretty popular ). I just find it spectacular that this kind of sh… can happed to big houses. As I am so so bored, I would pretty much like to see blood here. So my questions to you guys are “How do you think Google will retaliate? A lawsuit? Maybe a new operating system with half of the code from Microsoft’s Windows 7? Maybe all of it :D?”

I would like to take a minute and wish to all our readers and their families “Happy Easter”.  Although this last Google PR update brought no changes to our directory, I hope that the quality of our listings and the hard work that we put into this portal to pay off eventually.

MyGreenCorner.com raises the bar

MyGreenCorner.com has recently changed the submission options. Due submission of large amounts of low quality sites, we have decided to ask for a submission fee for any commercial site that wants to join our family. There is still a free option, but this is addressed solely to educational/governmental/nonprofit sites. Please note that this submission fee does not guarantee the approval of your site. This payment represents the tax for reviewing your site. Please note we will refund your payment if your site will not be approved, but only if it doesn’t break the submission rules.

Also, although some of the plans state that your link is permanent, we will review your link each year, to ensure that your site still complies with our quality terms. If your sites fails to do so, it will be removed with no prior notification. In the spirit of this idea, we have removed a lot of low quality sites from our directory in the past months, keeping only the cream, the best of the best.

Please note that we are trying to maintain a good collection of links, that is why we have adopted all this rules. We believe that this will satisfy both our visitors (by providing the best relevant sites out there) and our subscribers (by offering them a place in one of the most exquisite collections out there).

Now, to move on other things. About the recent post on article directories, I have tried to raise attention both on Google:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Web+Search/thread?tid=3734996837f96e4a&hl=en

and webmaster forums:

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1675032

but with little success. It seems that this topic interests little/none. Google seems to give more attention on doodles or Google Buzz release, and webmasters comply in the obscurity of their profiles and enjoy the possibility of not having any opinion.

“Lovers day” came (it was also my birthday!) and went. Best wishes to all lovers out there.

Vancouver is up, and it’s bloody already. I address my sincere thoughts to the family of Nomar Kumaritashvili.

Until next time,

Bbye
