How to build a wind generator

Steps to Build the Generator:

Step 1: Wind Generator Blades

Take the PVC pipe. This can be purchased from a hardware shop. Decide the length as per the size of the wind generator being built. Pipes used in gutters are ideally suited to this purpose. The breadth of the pipe must be at least 20 percent of its length. On the basis of the wind generator size choose the wind blade length. Twenty inches is the standard size used for a homemade wind generator model.

Step 2: Attaching Directions

Take the pipe and cut it up into four pieces such that all these pieces are of the same length. Make a half cut diagonally and carve out triangular shapes from the pipe. These shall be the blades. Take a round metal piece that has a hole at the centre. At a hardware store you can purchase these hubs. The diameter of the hole must be such that it can fit up with the motor. Place the blades around the rim of the hub and make sure they are at equal gaps. Screw up the ends onto the hub rim. Now slot on the hub, with the blades, on the motor and ensure that the set up is snugly fitted. Now take the motor and place at the end of the two by four wooden piece of wood. Cover the motor with the plastic sheet so that it receives protection from moisture and rain. Cedar wood too can be cut into blades of the desired length instead of PVC pipes. The motor must be of 40 volts.

Step 3: Wiring

At the free end of this one yard piece of wood, place tough plastic which forms the tail of the set up. This is required for maneuvering of the movement of the wind generator blades. Using the drill, make a small hole at a place behind the motor of the generator. Fit the pipe bracket underneath and next, take a small piece of pipe and position it into the bracket. The wires attached to the motor needs to go through this freely moving pipe attached. The wires must be coated with water proof insulation and must be made to run in a way that they remain out of reach of any rodent or small animals.

Step 4: Securing the System

The large block of lumber shall act as the base of the home made wind generator. Place the base on the ground and secure it so that it remains in place firmly. Now take the wind generator set up built and attach it ion to the base. Fix it in a manner that it does not get off the position under any circumstance.

Step 5: Final Steps

Attach the wire ends to the battery terminals according to the diagram of the connection plan. Read the guidelines carefully and make sure the rubber gloves are worn while dealing with these components. The wind generator system is all ready for use. The next gust of wind shall initiate the generation of power.

Maintenance and Permission Tips:

Before building the home wind generator, one needs to obtain the required permissions and sanctions from the local utility centre of their state. A meter too needs to be connected and the net arrangement for the meter too needs to be obtained from the regulatory office. There are rules for net metering which vary from state to state. The home wind generators save up to a huge amount on electricity costs. According to the unit of the generator, the savings vary. The speed of the wind and related factors too affect the costs. The noise garneted out of the wind generator is not very high. Annual maintenance services can be booked with local generator contractors. Maintaining wind generators at regular intervals is needed to make them last long and function smoothly. Oil the blades and the motor from time to time. Check that all screws and bolts are in place. An annual check is good enough. A home wind generator can last at least 15 years with timely maintenance.

Remember that the home made wind generator is of eco friendly rating. The expense incurred is negligible. The hardware stores have ready stocks of motor and wires. These are the only equipment required. The other materials are all very light on the pocket. However, make sure that the quality of the materials being used is not very poor. The material should be sturdy and obtained from a reliable source. This shall affect the performance of the generator being made. Make an estimation of daily consumption of electricity at home. Choose the wind generator power unit accordingly.
